Navjot Kaur Sidhu Quits Congress, Launches Fierce Attack on Punjab Leadership
Senior Congress leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu on Saturday announced her resignation from the party, accusing Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring of severely harming the organisation and branding his leadership as ineffective and riddled with corruption.
Her decision comes weeks after she was suspended from the party’s primary membership following a public controversy sparked by remarks she made about money allegedly influencing chief ministerial ambitions in the state.
Sharp Allegations Against State Leadership
In a strongly worded post on social media, Kaur claimed that Warring had selectively targeted her while overlooking other senior leaders. She alleged that he had entered into an understanding with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab for personal benefit, a move she said weakened the Congress from within.
She further accused him of shielding individuals who, according to her, had acted against her husband, former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, while rewarding them with influential posts in the organisation.
Claims of Political Targeting
Kaur asserted that efforts were made to engineer her defeat in elections by encouraging rival candidatures in her constituency. She also questioned why disciplinary action had not been taken against several prominent leaders whom she claimed had openly challenged the state party chief.
Although she said she possessed evidence to support her charges, Kaur added that she preferred to step away from the party rather than continue internal battles.
Background to the Fallout
Last month, Kaur had triggered a political storm after suggesting that enormous financial backing was required to become chief minister in Punjab. At the time, she also stated that her husband would return to active politics if the Congress projected him as its chief ministerial candidate in the state.
She had earlier insisted that despite her suspension, she and her husband remained committed to the party. Her latest announcement, however, marks a decisive break with the Congress leadership.
Political Journey
Navjot Kaur Sidhu began her legislative career as an MLA from Amritsar East in 2012 on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket before later joining the Congress, where she served in various organisational and government roles.
