Rajnath Singh Commissions India’s First Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel Samudra Pratap in Goa

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday commissioned Samudra Pratap, the Indian Coast Guard’s first indigenously designed and built pollution control vessel, at a ceremony held in Goa. The induction marks a major milestone in strengthening India’s maritime environmental protection capabilities.

A New Asset for Marine Safety and Law Enforcement

Samudra Pratap will function as a key platform for enforcing marine pollution control regulations while also supporting maritime law enforcement, search and rescue missions, and protection of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Its multi-role capability enhances the Coast Guard’s ability to respond swiftly to environmental and maritime emergencies.

High Level of Indigenous Content

The vessel has been developed with over 70 percent indigenous content, reflecting India’s growing self-reliance in defence shipbuilding. One of its standout features is an onboard helicopter hangar, which significantly expands its operational reach and surveillance capability over vast maritime areas.

Minister Highlights Environmental Responsibility

During the commissioning ceremony, Rajnath Singh described Samudra Pratap as a symbol of India’s maritime confidence and collective national resolve. He stressed that protecting marine biodiversity is not just a strategic need but also a moral responsibility, particularly in the context of climate change.

The Defence Minister noted that the vessel will play a vital role in safeguarding coral reefs, coastal ecosystems, and fishing communities. He also encouraged the defence industry to strive for 90 percent indigenization in future shipbuilding projects.

Built Under Aatmanirbhar Bharat Vision

Constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited, the 114-metre-long hybrid pollution control vessel represents a significant achievement under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The ship is equipped with advanced systems to detect, contain, and recover oil spills at sea.

Advanced Pollution Response Capabilities

Samudra Pratap features modern sweeping arms, dynamic positioning systems, and specialised equipment designed to respond effectively to marine pollution incidents. These capabilities will help India better protect its maritime environment and ensure compliance with international pollution control standards.

With the commissioning of Samudra Pratap, the Indian Coast Guard takes a decisive step towards enhancing environmental security and reinforcing India’s role as a responsible maritime nation.
