PM Modi to Launch Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on Guwahati–Kolkata Route
India is set to take another major leap in railway modernisation as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to inaugurate the country’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train. The new semi-high-speed train will operate on the Guwahati–Kolkata route, marking a significant upgrade in long-distance rail travel.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the development on Thursday, highlighting that the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express has been designed to offer enhanced comfort, speed, and safety for overnight journeys.
Key Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
Sharing details of the train, Vaishnaw said the new sleeper variant has been developed with advanced technology and passenger-centric features.

- Safety systems: Kavach automatic train protection system

Enhanced Passenger Comfort
The sleeper train has been designed to improve long-distance travel comfort. It features modern interiors, improved sleeping arrangements, and enhanced sanitation systems. According to the Railways Minister, special attention has been given to cleanliness and passenger safety.
The automatic doors and aerodynamic exterior will also help in improving energy efficiency and reducing travel time.
Boost to Northeast Connectivity
The introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper service on the Guwahati–Kolkata route is expected to significantly improve rail connectivity between the Northeast and eastern India. It will provide a faster, safer, and more comfortable alternative to existing overnight trains.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon flag off the train. The official launch date is expected to be announced shortly.
