Iran Defends Prolonged Internet Shutdown
The Iranian government has enforced a nationwide internet blackout that has now stretched beyond four days, triggering strong criticism from international observers and human rights groups.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that authorities initially engaged in dialogue with demonstrators after protests erupted over economic hardships.
According to Araghchi, the internet was restricted only after security agencies detected what they described as coordinated “terrorist operations” allegedly directed from outside Iran’s borders.
European Leaders Question Iranian Leadership
The developments have prompted sharp reactions from European leaders. During a visit to India, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz questioned the legitimacy of Iran’s leadership, stating that the current situation may signal the final phase of the existing regime.
His remarks underline growing international concern over the political future of Iran and the handling of public dissent.
Finland Moves to Summon Iranian Ambassador
Finland has also taken diplomatic steps in response to the crackdown. The country’s Foreign Minister announced plans to summon Iran’s ambassador, condemning both the violent response to protests and the prolonged digital blackout.
“This will not be tolerated,” she said, adding that Finland stands firmly with the Iranian people, regardless of gender or background.
Global Scrutiny Intensifies
As protests continue and internet access remains restricted, Iran faces mounting pressure from the international community. Governments and rights groups are calling for transparency, restoration of communications, and restraint in the use of force.
With no immediate resolution in sight, the unfolding situation remains under close global watch.
