Military Issues Warning as Protests Spread
The statement said that the armed forces, operating under the authority of Iran’s Supreme Leader, are closely monitoring regional developments and will act decisively to counter any perceived threats.
Authorities are facing mounting pressure as protests over rising inflation, economic hardship and cost-of-living concerns continue to grow. The demonstrations are being described as the largest wave of unrest Iran has seen in recent years.
Fresh Demonstrations Reported Across Multiple Cities
On Saturday, new gatherings were reported in northern Tehran, where crowds lit fireworks, banged utensils and chanted slogans opposing the current political system, according to verified video footage.
Unverified clips circulating online also suggested protest activity in Rasht, Tabriz, Shiraz and Kerman, indicating that the demonstrations are spreading well beyond the capital.
The protests, which began in late December, have increasingly included calls for sweeping political change, challenging the clerical leadership that has ruled Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Human Rights Groups Raise Alarm
International human rights organisations have expressed serious concern over the government’s response. Norway-based group Iran Human Rights reported that at least 51 protesters, including nine minors, have been killed during clashes with security forces.
Hundreds more are believed to have been injured, while reports of mass arrests continue to surface.
Internet Shutdown Draws Global Criticism
Amnesty International strongly criticised Iran’s nationwide internet restrictions, calling the blackout a deliberate attempt to conceal alleged human rights abuses.
The organisation said the shutdown was aimed at suppressing information and preventing documentation of actions taken against protesters.
Authorities Issue Stark Legal Warnings
Iran’s Attorney General, Mohammad Movahedi Azad, issued a stern warning, stating that individuals participating in protests could face charges of being an “enemy of God” — a crime that carries the death penalty under Iranian law.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) separately warned that protecting the achievements of the 1979 revolution and maintaining national security remain absolute red lines.
Uncertainty Ahead
As protests continue and security forces tighten their grip, uncertainty looms over how the situation will evolve. Rights groups are urging restraint and calling on Iranian authorities to respect freedom of expression and assembly.
