Bharat Steel 2026 to Highlight India’s Vision for Sustainable and Advanced Steelmaking
India is set to host Bharat Steel 2026, a global conference and exhibition focused on the future of steel manufacturing. The two-day event, scheduled for 16–17 April 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, will be organised by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India.
The summit is expected to bring together policymakers, industry leaders, technology providers, researchers, and investors from across the world. Its primary objective is to position India as a global hub for next-generation steel production driven by sustainability, digital transformation, and innovation-led growth.
Strengthening Global Supply Chains and Low-Emission Steel
Bharat Steel 2026 will focus on key challenges facing the global steel industry, including supply chain resilience, rising energy costs, trade uncertainties, and carbon reduction commitments. With countries pushing toward net-zero targets, low-emission steel has emerged as a critical priority.
India aims to play a leadership role by promoting cleaner production technologies while maintaining large-scale industrial capacity. The conference will explore collaborative approaches to make steel production more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.
Steel as a Pillar of India’s Economic Growth
The Indian steel sector continues to be a backbone of national development, supporting infrastructure, transportation, housing, defence, and energy projects. Government targets aim to expand steel production capacity to 300 million tonnes by 2030 and 500 million tonnes by 2047.
Policymakers emphasize that growth must go beyond capacity expansion. Key reforms are being discussed in raw material beneficiation, logistics efficiency, regulatory stability, and reduced reliance on imported coking coal.
Boost to Specialty and High-Value Steel
A major highlight of the summit will be India’s shift toward high-grade and specialty steels. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme is playing a crucial role in encouraging domestic manufacturing of advanced steel used in automotive, aerospace, defence, and precision engineering sectors.
This transition is expected to reduce import dependence and enhance India’s competitiveness in global high-value steel markets.
Green Steel and Digital Transformation
Sustainability will remain central to discussions at Bharat Steel 2026. The government’s Green Steel Roadmap outlines pathways such as green hydrogen adoption, carbon capture and storage technologies, increased scrap recycling, and innovative electrolysis-based steelmaking.
Digitalisation will also take centre stage, with a focus on artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, and IoT-enabled monitoring systems. These technologies are expected to improve productivity, quality control, and energy efficiency while reducing emissions.
India’s Role in the Global Steel Market
As global trade increasingly factors in carbon intensity, India is positioning itself as a reliable exporter of low-emission steel. The National Steel Strategy supports international collaborations, joint ventures, and research partnerships to accelerate adoption of emerging technologies.
With participation from over 700 delegates, including global corporations, startups, public sector units, and state governments, Bharat Steel 2026 aims to align industry efforts with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047—a technologically advanced, self-reliant, and resilient economy.
