Legal Battle Over Censor Delay
Producers Move Court Ahead of Release Date
KVN Productions LLP, the production house behind Jana Nayagan, filed a petition on Tuesday seeking judicial intervention over the delay by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The matter is expected to be taken up by the court on Wednesday, just two days before the planned release.
CBFC Asked to Submit All Records
Justice P.T. Asha directed Additional Solicitor General AR.L. Sundaresan, appearing on behalf of the CBFC, to place all relevant documents before the court. This includes a complaint reportedly received against the film’s content. The court asked for the records to be submitted promptly, considering the looming release date.
Producers Cite Heavy Losses
₹500 Crore Investment at Stake
Senior counsel Satish Parasaran, representing the production house along with advocate Vijayan Subramanian, argued that the delay was causing serious and irreparable damage. According to him, the producers have invested nearly ₹500 crore in the project.
Planned Release on 5,000 Screens
The counsel further informed the court that Jana Nayagan was slated for a massive release across approximately 5,000 screens worldwide. Any uncertainty at this stage, he said, would result in financial losses, mental stress and reputational harm to the production company.
Timeline of Censor Certification
Post-Production Completed in December
The court was told that post-production work on the film was completed on December 15, 2025, and the final version was submitted to the CBFC on December 18.
Examining Committee Recommendations Followed
Following its review, the CBFC’s examining committee reportedly recommended a U/A 16+ certificate, subject to certain cuts and modifications. The producers accepted these suggestions and implemented all required changes.
No Response After Modified Version Submission
The revised version of the film was submitted on December 24. Despite full compliance and repeated reminders from the production house, the CBFC did not issue the certificate for nearly ten days, the counsel claimed.
Awaiting the Court’s Verdict
Decision to Determine Release Fate
With just days left for the scheduled release, all eyes are now on the Madras High Court’s decision. The verdict will determine whether Jana Nayagan reaches theatres on time or faces an unexpected delay.
